Το 66ο Φεστιβάλ των Καννών ξεκίνησε εχτές, 15 Μαΐου, με τον Steven Spielberg επικεφαλής της κριτικής επιτροπής, την Nicole Kidman, τον Ang Lee και τον Christoph Waltz ανάμεσα στα μέλη της, την Audrey Tautou οικοδέσποινα της τελετής έναρξης, και πρώτη ταινία τον Υπέροχο Γκάτσμπυ του Baz Luhrman με τον Leonardo DiCaprio και την Carey Mulligan στους πρωταγωνιστικούς ρόλους. Και μπορεί να μην είμαι εκεί, ακόμη, όμως ζω ήδη στην ατμόσφαιρα της Γαλλικής Ριβιέρας. Τη δεύτερη ημέρα του φεστιβάλ η Sofia Coppola σήμανε την έναρξη της παράλληλης ενότητας Ένα Κάποιο Βλέμμα, όπου προβλήθηκε η ταινία της The Bling Ring με πρωταγωνίστρια την Emma Watson. Πρόεδρος αυτής της κριτικής επιτροπής είναι ο Thomas Vinterberg.

Steven Spielberg: My opinion is very straightforward, we are always judging, we are constantly judging films we see at the cinema, evaluating them and trying to see what is radically new in them. Films are always in competition with each other for audiences' attention.

Nicole Kidman: I think that it is important to contribute to the celebration of film. I finally had the time to sit down and watch films. Cannes is a prestigious festival that has done a lot to promote the films in which I have acted.
